Optical v Ionisation - Optical detectors use an optical chamber with a LED and receiver. They are more effective in detecting slow burning fires that produce large particles. In most countries they are the preferred method of detection. They can be disposed of with common household waste. Ionisation detectors utilise a radioactive source (Americium Oxide AM02) and should not be disposed of with household waste.
