PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS:

Loft caps allow thermal insulation to be layed over your downlights allowing you to trap the heat inside the room.

Before loft caps existed people used to cut around the insulation which defeats the point of having. Thermal insulation is requirement of Part L of the Building Regulations which relates to energy efficiency.

Loft caps can be used on either fire rated or non fire rated downlights as they not allow act as a barrier for the insulation to sit on but they also provide 60 minute fire protection which is adequate for homes. It is estimated that you can save around £5 per year, per loft cap as they prevent warm air from escaping the room. Around twenty cubic metres of air can pass through a downlight hole per hour, a downlighter hole acts like a chimney and sucks out the warm air from the room into the cold loft space above.

They carry the F Capped Approval which means they can be used as barrier between the downlight and the insulation. Using other apparatus like plant pots or paper maches etc might appear to do the same job but they're not designed to and are not air tight. Using anything that is not fully approved could create a potential fire hazard.
